What Causes Elevated WBC Count Along With Nausea And Dizziness?

My daughter age 54 was just admitted to the hospital and blood tests showed a very high white blood count. The past week she had been complaining of pain in the left shoulder going down to her waist. She was also having periods of nausea and dizziness. Today she had a bad attack and was taken from work to local hospital. After doing blood work, they transferred her to UMass Medical in Worcester, MA I got the call around 7pm, I called her right away but she was very sleepy, she told me her count was 48.000. Not sure she got it right as she was very slurry. I am going to the hospital first thing in the morning. Can you tell me what might be causing such a high white blood count ? My first thought was leukemia, very scary.
