What Causes Elevated ANA Levels?

I have positive ana 1:1280 centromere pattern. Have MS, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis but count was not high when I was diagnosed in 2006. Would flare-ups cause the increase? I also have new pains in the last year of low back pain at night, hurts so bad to turn. Once I get up and move around I m fine besides the normal aching during the day. New pain in left shoulder and right deltoid muscle. Went in to begin with because of low back pain and blood in urine. They put me on antibiotic but back pain is still there. Not sure if blood is still there because she didn t retest and can t get in to see her for another month. Have had new symptom with metal smelling bowel movements also and I have fungus on big toe nail. Could any of this be reason for elevated ana?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Elevated ANA levels are due to auto-immune diseases like SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), inflammatory myositis (polymyositis or dermatomyositis), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) etc. High ANA titres (1:1280), indicates more severe disease.

Anti-centromere antibodies (ACAs) is common in limited systemic scleroderma. Fungal infection in nail has nothing to do with ANA levels.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
