What Causes Elevated ALT And AST Levels?

recent blood tests indicate possible liver problems (Above normal ALT. AST values). Am wondering if current medications could cause this. I do not drink a lot, 1 02 2 per month. Meds I take - Allopurinol 300MG, Tamsulosin 0.4 MG, Toprol 25mg, Gemfibrozil 600 MG.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on your description, the cause for your elevated ALT and AST levels could be due to:
1. Drug induced inflammation of the liver.
2. Alcohol induced liver damage.
Since you have not given the values, it is difficult to interpret the results.
Kindly get your complete Liver Function Test (LFT) done along with ultrasound scan of the abdomen.
Kindly consult Gastroenterologist with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
Regards,
Dr.Ashakiran.S.,
MBBS., MD.
