Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Dry Heaving Along With Vomiting Up Of Blood?
My 5 year old son started vomiting about 5 hours ago, about every 30 minutes. For the past 3 hours it s been mostly dry heaving, but the last 2 times he produced a little bit of bloody mucus. He s sleeping in between, but it s still continuing about every 20 minutes, and the time in between doesn t seem to be stretching out. Suggestions?
The following are few causes of repeated vomiting in kids: 1) Viral gastritis 2) Food poisoning 3) Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs when given on empty stomach 4) Food allergies 5) Excessive coughing 6) Serious causes like appendicitis, a kidney infection, diabetes and head injury 7) Pyloric stenosis 8) Migraine headache
Just vomiting (without any diarrhea) will stop within 24 hours or so. If it lasts for more than 24 hours, you must consider more serious causes. Please do consult a pediatrician as soon as possible. But please don't worry as all the conditions are treatable if detected early.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
