What Causes Dry Flaky Scalp While On Protar And Topisal 6% Lotion?

I have dry flaky scalp and the condition has aggravated. Doctor suggested Protar and Topisal 6% lotion. When I applied protar shampoo today, I noticed flakes and strands falling after the hair got dry. Usually with other shampoos, this happens the next day after applying shampoo. Doctor is saying you should also apply Topisal at the night and then wash with Protar and do this daily. Shall I continue with this treatment?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Protar shampoo is a coal tar that works by making the skin shed faster the dead cells of the skin from its top layer and slows the growth and slows down the growth of skin cells. This is the reason you noticed a higher shedding after the first use. With continued use, you will notice the scaling decreasing more and more until it stops.
Topisal is a steroid drug the decreases the inflammation of this skin, which causes dead cells.
I recommend you continue using both as prescribed by your doctor and you will soon see an improvement soon.

Wishing you all the best.
