What Causes Drainage Of Blood From Mouth Post Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

I had my wisdom teeth pulled on Monday and it is Wednesday a week later, so 9 days after the teeth were removed. I was brushing my teeth and when I spit I noticed blood, more than if you had a bleeding gum. I wasn't sure if that was a blood clot or if I am past that stage of worry about dislodging it. Should I be concerned about getting a dry socket?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of drainage of blood from mouth post wisdom tooth extraction which is due to large area of laceration and improper healing. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to wash gently oral cavity with cold water, wipe off clots outside cavity and apply moistened gauze pad on extraction site for 30 minutes at least. To avoid bleeding sit upright and don't spit again and again. Avoid vigorous activities. Don't smoke for at least 72 hours. Apply ice packs inside and outside oral cavity to reduce swelling and it helps in clot formation. Take ibuprofen or Tylenol 200 mg tablet after every four hours to avoid pain. Drink lot of water and cold liquids. Take very soft diet to eat. Don't brush oral cavity, only rinse with mouthwash. Visit your dentist if bleeding did not stop at all as that could be due to formation of dry socket. Get sutures done.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
