What Causes Dizziness And Nausea While Taking A Shower?

Whenever I get into our shower/tub, which is very high for me to step up especially with two knee replacements. Once in the shower I get nauseous, am very dizzy/lightheaded and usually around half the time I end up having a bowel movement. I don’t feel it. I just notice it when I am wiping and see it or smell it. This is disgusting! I have epilepsy, connective tissue disorder, positive ANA, treated regularly for gout have dry mouth and take numerous medications. Why, when I take a shower, do all these things happen to me? Am I going to be all right?

Hello,

During a hot shower, the body tries to cool itself by dilating its blood vessels. This results in less blood flow to the brain, resulting in light-headedness, dizziness, and syncope.

First, try using lukewarm or even cold water when you shower; most doctors recommend keeping water below 110 degrees. Prevent steam from building up in the shower by opening a bathroom window or door. Limit time spent in hot showers to five minutes; or, if taking long showers, come out of the shower every five minutes. You could also use a vent fan; it is a helpful way to prevent your bathroom from getting too hot.

If you do feel faint after a hot shower, lying flat on the floor or with the legs slightly elevated promotes blood flow back to the head. If still not improved, please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
