What Causes Dizziness And Low Pulse Rate While On Atenolol And Chlortalidone?
I am 64 years old, average physical condition. I ve been on blood pressure medicine for 12+ years. 50 atenenol/25 Chlorothalydone. (Sp?) I recently have been feeling light headed, have been following my pulse rate on my Apple Watch and it consistently was 46-50/min. I wasn t feeling good, mostly light headed so I went to Walgreens to get my blood pressure checked. Blood Pressure was pretty good, 145/80 but the heart rate was 46. I called my physician and he suggested going off the meds and monitor. That was three days ago. My heart rate seems to have stabilized at 60-63 but my blood pressure today was 156/93. Thought I would monitor it for a few more days. I feel fine. Should I be concerned with the BP? When should I be concerned about the BP?
Hello, Thanks for the query. Atenolol, the selective beta blocker causes slowing down of heart rate in addition to reducing BP. Since you have stopped that medication, you may switch over to other antihypertensives like ARBS -Telmisartan or Olmesartan, both these drugs will help controlling BP better and will also not slow down the heart as mauch. BP should be ideally maintained between 120 to 130 /70 to 80 mm Hg and heart rate around 60 to 70 /minute.
