Hello June Dugger,
Welcome to HCM and thank you for your query.
The commonest cause for discomfort in the neck in people of your age is
Cervical Spondylosis. It is a condition of wear and tear affecting the spinal disks in your neck. As the disks dehydrate and shrink, bone spurs and other signs of
osteoarthritis develop.
Sometimes, cervical spondylosis results in a narrowing of the space needed by the
spinal cord and the nerve roots that originate at the spinal cord and pass through the spine to the rest of your body. If the spinal cord or nerve roots become pinched, you may experience
tingling, numbness and weakness in your arms and hands.
Till you see the doctor, you can get some relief with OTC muscle relaxants and anti inflammatory medicines.
Use only a thin pillow or avoid a pillow.
Exercise to strengthen your neck muscles.
Application of heat with a hot water bottle or
heating pad may also help.
I am available if you have further queries.
