Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Discomfort In The Feet And Excessive Thirst?
I have a 18 yr old grandson who does not like u to touch his feet and rubs them a lot in his crib like they are itchy or bothering him and drinks water like crazy. Could he be showing early signs of diabetes? His father, grandfather grandmother and others in family have it.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Excessive thirst is the commonest symptom of diabetes but is not exclusive to it. There is no point in not checking his sugar level.
Other causes of these symptoms may be increased calcium in the body I would like to check his calcium as well if sugar is normal.
If sugar and calcium are normal, then we generally advise such patient to collect his 24 hours urine to quantify the amount of urine he passes in 24 hours. If more than 3.5 litters, then we refer such patient to the endocrinologist for better evaluation.
So, I would advise to do his sugar level, calcium level, urine examination and discuss with your general physician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
