Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking Cephalexin for a UTI. I started it Wednesday and started taking placebo pills of my birth control Friday night. My period was supposed to start this morning. However, I did not. Is this caused by the antibiotics or am I more likely pregnant? I have never had a late period or missed a pill.
Cephalexin does not cause a delay in periods, it has no such side effects. Antibiotics do effect the efficacy of the contraceptive pills. If you are taking antibiotics you should use a backup contraceptive device (condom, etc) to avoid getting pregnant.
If you have not missed any pills & did not have unprotective sexual intercourse you shouldn't be pregnant.
However, sometimes delay in periods may occur due to thickening of the cervical mucus, not ovulating, thinned uterine endometrium to prevent implantation.
If you have a missed period get a pregnancy test done after 10-12 days to stay on the safer side.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
