What Causes Decreased Neutrophils And Increased Lymphocytes?

decreased neutrophils and increased lymphocytes: Hi Dr This is a question regards to decreased neutrophils and increased lymphocytes to my Mother s regular blood count: She is 62 yrs old with Cholesterol and Diabetes. She made heart stent surgery in 2009 period. She had regular GP visits for 8 years. However a month age, she did her regular blood count and had a below result: (10/08/2015) Neutrophils: 32.9 (40-80%) Lymphocytes: 53.6 (20-40%) Monocytes: 9.1 (2-10%) Eosinophils: 3.2 (1-6%) Basophils: 1.2 (.1-2%) Based on this report, Dr (Haematologist) this could be a reason due to her medication on Cholesterol. However, my mother s regular GP suggested to have another blood count within month time and obtain a opinion from referred Haematologist. She made the blood count again on 10/9/2015 and result as follows: WBC 5.20 10e3/ul NEU 1.47 (28.3%) LYM 2.99 (57.4%) Mono .494 (9.49%) EOS .171 (3.29%) BASO .081 (1.56%) RBC 4.3 10e6/ul HGB 12.8 g/dl HCT 38.3 % MCV 88.8 FL MCH 29.8 pg MCHC 33.5 g/dl RDW 9.83 % PLT 174. 10e3/ul After reviewing above result Haematologist suggested to do the born marrow test. (Also after reviewing my monther s RBC report since 2009 to date she always has decreased neutrophils and increased lymphocytes very marginally). I am really confused, is she facing any dangerous illness. Pls advise me Dr. Many thanks for the help. God bless you all. Regards Gaj

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, long term basis raised lymphocytes with low neutrophils indicate various possibilities as:

- dysfunction of T and B cells responsible for class switching of immunoglobulins
- margination defects of neutrophis at the endothelial surface
- chronic viral infections
- others

However, a detailed study of her bone marrow biopsy result is must to comment further in this regard.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
