What Causes Decreased PTH Level In Blood?

I had surgery to remove a parathyroid gland and a large benign tumor on my throid gland 4 weeks ago. My blood tests show no decrease in my PTH . My surgeon is recommending another nuclear scan of the parathyroid and throid. Any other causes we should look at ?

Parathormone (PTH) is secreted from parathyroid gland, which is in close association with the thyroid gland. They are 4 in number, variably located on the back of the thyroid gland.

Parathyroid hormone and calcitonin play key roles in regulating the amount of calcium in the blood and within the bones. Removal of one of them would not significantly affect the PTH levels.

Your doctor must have advised nuclear scan just to ensure that the parathyroid glands are intact and the tumor of the thyroid has been successfully removed.

Kindly get the investigations done as recommended by your doctor and do the necessary follow-up as advised.
