What Causes Dark Discolouration And Pain On Left Toe?

I have had a recurrent dark reddish to brown painful area on the bottom of my left toe, the 4th toe from the big toe, about 1/4 by 1/8 . I have tried to freeze it off, an the skin eventually turned white and there was no discoloration or pain. But the dark area returned along with the pain. I then tried cutting it off, and I peeled it off, along with the discoloration. There was bleeding and pain. A few days later, the skin was white and there was no longer pain. The dark area again about 1/4 by 1/8 , came back again, along with pain. I thought it was a plantar wart all along, but I have heard that the plantar wart can be misdiagnosed and rally be a melanoma. I appreciate any help. Thank you.
