What Causes Cystic Acne While Treating Crohn S Disease?

I was diagnosed recently with mild crohn s amd has been taking Pentax s a for 6 weeks now. In the past 2.5 weeks I have been breaking out with pretty significant cystic acne. Acne has never been a problem for me in the past and im on no other new medications or treatments. Is this reported and might she need to switch meds?

Hello,

Based on the history provided, you have been taking Pentasa (mesalazine) as a treatment for Crohn's disease. In my opinion you should have a physical examination by a dermatologist for the acne that you have, to diagnose if this is cystic acne, a skin complication of Crohn's disease ,or a side effect of Mesalazine. Cystic acne is a rare skin disease, that occurs commonly in 11-30 years old patients and is caused by hormonal changes.

Acne is a very uncommon side effect of Mesalazine.
Choosing the right treatment is important because it's different for each of these conditions:

-You have to avoid taking Mesalazine if it's caused by it.
-You have to use Isotretinoin if this is a cystic acne.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suela Gjata,
