What Causes Coughing Up Of Brown Phlegm While On Treatment For Aspiration Pneumonia?

I was diagnosed with Aspiration Pneumonia, 1 week ago after inhaling some food. I took prednisone for 3 days and also was prescribed Augmentin, which i have 3 days left of taking that pill. My question is, I am still coughing up what looks like brown specks of phlegm, do you think the medication is working? Should mucus still be there? Also, should i wait until i finish this medication and then have a sputum culture done... not sure if this medication is working thanks dr

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You should wait until you complete the antibiotic course. Sometimes minor inflammation can lead to continuous mucus secretion. If after completion, of course, symptoms continue than chest X-ray and sputum analysis should be done for further work up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
