What Causes Convulsions After Drinking Alcohol?

Hi. So I have a quick question. Whenever I m really drunk my eyes always roll in the back of my head. It s really embarrassing. I m fine though. It s not like I have alcohol poisoning or anything like that. Is there any way to stop that from happening? Besides the obvious- to stop drinking. I ve been in college so I m going to be drunk again. I just don t want my eyes to be rolling around like that. It s very bizarre to me.

Hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.

First, your symptoms are suggestive of seizures. And this need not be the more commonly feared generalized seizures. These may be partial seizures that are localized to a certain area only and the patient may be even conscious during the episodes. These are called partial seizures. This is one of the few conditions that can possibly cause the eyes to roll up without loss of consciousness.

Second, seizures are known to be triggered by alcohol. This is because there is a threshold for seizures. Beyond that threshold seizures do occur. This threshold is lowered by alcohol. So you develop seizures when you are drunk.

Third, what exactly do you mean that you need to drink because you are in college? There is no college that would have rule that you need to have alcohol to be a part/student of the college. So you can very well avoid alcohol. There is no hard and fast rules for alcohol drinking in colleges- we know, doctors have been to colleges too. ANd frankly, you have said it yourself- its obvious that you need to stop alcohol.

Fourth, visit a neurologist as soon as possible. You need to be tested by an EEG and MRI Brain test. This needs to be done as soon as possible and thereafter you need to be started on medicines that inhibit or prevent seizures. And you should avoid driving, alcohol, late night sleeping, flickering lights especially in dark, and swimming for the time being. If you continue to consume alcohol, seizures may persist despite being on medicines.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in the message will help you make a appropriate judgement for yourself.
Best of luck, Dr Mittal
