What Causes Constipation, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome And Hair Loss?

Three years back, I visited my PCP with the following symptoms, weight gain, difficulty losing weight, fatigue, exhaustion, feeling run down and sluggish, depression, moodiness, difficulty concentrating, dry and itchy skin, dry thinning hair, feeling cold, constipation, puffiness in hands, feet, eye area, face, carpal tunnel syndrome, foot and heel pain, trembling while holding an object. My PCP referred me to an Endocrinologist for further evaluation. My visits to the Endocrinologist required several visits in the calendar year. I was informed I cycle back and forth between hyperthyroid and hypothyroid. I was prescribed multiple blood test and follow-ups with variations in the dose of Synthroid and Methimazole in an effort to balance my T3 and T4. After the diagnosis of my Thyroid, I was informed I have Stage 1 Thyroid Nodules and that a small percentage can be cancerous. My anxiety from this diagnosis compelled me to agree to the Thyroidectomy. From the post surgery report, I learned I received a partial Thyroidectomy to leave behind enough thyroid tissue to prevent hypothyroidism. From the Pathology report, I learned my Thyroid nodules were benign. The goal of the partial Thyroidectomy was not achieved and I had to revisit the hospital for radioactive iodine treatment because my partial Thyroid was over active and need to slow down production of hormones. As my result from the partial Thyroidectomy, I am taking daily 125 MCG of Levothyroxine. My blood tests indicate my T3 and T4 are in range. However, I still have hypothyroidism symptoms of weight gain, difficulty losing weight, fatigue, exhaustion, feeling run down and sluggish, depression, moodiness, difficulty concentrating, dry and itchy skin, dry thinning hair, feeling cold, constipation, puffiness in hands, feet, eye area, face, carpal tunnel syndrome, foot and heel pain, trembling while holding an object. I wish I had received more comprehensive testing performed and my test reviewed by a Pathologist to confirm I received the correct diagnosis and staging information, and developed a personalized treatment plan. My objective is to remove or improve my existing symptoms. I am considering adding a daily Thyroid supplement. Many are not FDA approved. As a Physician consultant, will you provide me with a suggestion(s) for a Thyroid supplement that will boost my Thyroid functions?

Welcome to HCM,
My, my, you have been through the ringer! This is quite a history! I am Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN, a nutrition specialist.

You may get other answers to your query, but I did want to suggest something for you after reading your detailed history.

Other clients I have had having issues with their Thyroid not performing despite medication and procedures, none as vast as your however, have benefited from one particular supplement. The supplement is called Thyroid Support Complex made by Pure Encapsulations. I am not familiar with other brands. You still need to monitor your thyroid regularly while on this, as you may have to titrate the dose according to how your thyroid responds.

You asked for a Thyroid supplement that would boost your thyroid function and this will. Just be careful to keep monitoring your Thyroid to see how it responds to this supplement so you don't set yourself on another up/down cycle with your thyroid hormones and always check with your doctor on any new additions to your treatment regimen.

My best wishes to you, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
