What Causes Constipation After A Gastro Bypass Surgery?

I had a gastro by-pass surgery almost three years ago. I have had a lot of problems with constipation. I take senokot, dulcosate, Metamucil and purelax every day. My doctor wants me to have a bowel movement every day. Even with all this I still get constipated. I was recently talking wit a dear friend of mine and he told me that he takes the pill form of magnesium citrate every day and it works well for him. He said he used to take other meds like I am taking and they didn t work for him. He says this works great. Is this something that I should look into for myself? How does it work?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Magnesium citrate is an osmotic laxative. This means that it works by osmosis it draws fluid into the bowel and relaxes the bowel. The increased fluids would help to soften the stool so that it becomes easier to pass.

You can see if it works for you, it is an over-the-counter medication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
