What Causes Constant Belching And Nausea?

My husband was feeling ill with constant deep belching for 2 days. He says it begins at night when he turns on his right side. He then belched constantly during the day., and felt nauceous. After not eating, then adding only bland food, he is feeling better. This is the second time this has happened.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is possible that he has GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). This can cause nausea and increased burping/belching.

It can also be associated with additional symptoms that may or may not occur- persistent dry cough, burning discomfort in the chest or upper abdomen, regurgitation of food, bloating, acid taste in the mouth, excess salivation.

Treatment involves diet changes, weight loss of any excess weight (it presses on the esophagus and stomach) and medication. He should see his doctor for assessment if it continues.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
