What Causes Cold, Excess Nose Blowing With Mucus And Ear Pressure?

Hello - I have had a bad cold. The most recent phase of it I have been blowing my nose a lot and the result has been green phlem. Last night when I blew my nose my right ear popped and it has been extremely painful ever since. What can I do to relieve the ear pressure?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that the pain may be related either to an ear infection (which can occur along with the cold) or eustachian tube dysfunction.

The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nasal passages. It has different functions. When it is not working as it should (which can occur as a result of infection such as the cold), then it can cause pain and a blocked sensation in the ear.

You may want to consider examination by your doctor to rule out infection.

If it is eustachian tube dysfunction then treatment involves : (1)decongestants
(2)antihistamine
(3)monitor- should resolve as the cold resolves

I hope this helps
