What Causes Circumvallate Papillae And White Coating On The Tongue?

My son has circumvillate papillae for at least the last six months. Is this normal? The back of his tongue also has a whitest coating (not thrush) and his throat particularly his left gland is inflamed. He is not in any pain with it. How can I get rid of this?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your son have symptoms of circumvallate papillae and white coating on the tongue which occurs when papillae become irritated and slightly swollen due to dehydration, dry mouth, excessive use of antibiotics, poor oral hygiene, stress, hormonal changes or acidic and spicy food.

Need not to worry. It generally doesn’t require treatment and clears up within 1-2 weeks. You have to take few preventive measures such as do warm saline rinses 2-3 times a day. Drink plenty of liquids and vitamin supplements. Maintain good oral hygiene. If condition doesn't get better in few days then consult oral pathologist for proper checkup and rule out condition like herpes or canker sore.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
