What Causes Chronic Knee Pain And Stiffness With History Of Knee Injury?

I m a 20 year old female of average height and weight, about 5 years ago I suffered a knee injury where my knee twisted and I heard a loud cracking/popping sound I was discharged from orthopedics after numerous x rays and ultrasounds with no conclusion of what caused the initial trauma, I was referred to physio for 4 weeks until the range movement in my knee was relatively back to normal. I returned to sporting activities at school and figure skating in which I had been competing even though I still experienced slight pains in my knee. Currently I often experience occasional sharp twinges in my knee whilst walking and after jogging my knee is always slightly painful and stiff. Do I need to be refereed to orthopedics or physio once more?

Hi

I have gone through your query.

The symptoms you have described sound like there may be an artefact or some injury to the internal knee structures. This can be seen with a meniscal injury or with a ligament tear.

These can cause pain, cracking, reduced movement, and some apprehension to movement. Usually, one can start with therapy to give strength to the muscles of the knee. Later, an evaluation can be done to assess strength. Getting an MRI may also be useful to confirm the structures that are damaged.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Vignan Rachabattuni
