What Causes Chronic Cough While On Z-Pak?

I started a z-pac 250mg on Thursday night. Took 2 tablets and on fri. took one. This morning I woke up in a terrible coughing spell that lasted until 6:30 and calmed down then. I also took 10 ml of robitussin 12 hr cough relief and aprox. 11.30 last nite. Once my coughing stated at 4 am I felt my face get hot and now it looks sunburned and feels very hot. My question is should I still take the anti biotic. I quit the cough syrup. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The antibiotic Z-pak will cover the causative pathogens, but there may be a cough via irritation of bronchioles through secretions.

Addition of bronchi dilator, antihistamine and steroids in the current drug regimen will help to recover early.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
