What Causes Chills Along With Cough And Fever?

I became sick this past week. It started off with chills, then cough, then fever and headache. The worst of it was over in three to four days. Now, I have fever blisters on my lips and mouth area. My gums are very sore and white now which make it hard to eat. What could be causing this problem with my gums???
