What Causes Chest Discomfort After A Rib Fracture?

I had a accident that broke eight ribs with the top three ribs broken in multiple places. My first night in the ICU a nurse used a sling to move me from the gurney to the bed. I objected because it looked dangerous, but he insisted because he said there was a lack of man power. As soon as he lifted I started screaming for him to put me down. He continued lifting me and I passed out from the pain. I came to and the straps were off of me and I felt OK. I have no idea how long I was out. The nurse that did the lifting ran off as soon as I woke up. I am concerned about possible damage from the compression on my upper body and organs. I experienced a burning pain for weeks afterward. It was in the middle of my chest and happened when my bladder was full. Once I emptied my bladder the pain lessened and would go away. I am still experiencing discomfort in my middle chest. I have a appointment and I will bring this up with my dr in two weeks. What should I do and what type of damage might of been done to me.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Separated ribs can be united by wearing and then applying strapping. For few days take complete bed rest, avoid lifting weight and pressure over chest. Get checked by orthopedic surgeon for checkup and advice on treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashok Kumar Dash
