What Causes Chapped Lips And Dryness Around The Mouth?
Hi, I m a 56 yr old woman- basically healthy. I ve had dry lips, peeling chapped skin around my mouth, and cracked corners of mouth for about 3 months. I have tried to keep area moist with either Blistex or lip balm but it won t go away. It s very frustrating- what do you think it is?
Your symptoms are pointing towards Perioral Dermatitis.. It is a kind of skin allergy or eczematous condition that can occur due to causes like long term use of steroid containing creams or ointments, fluoride containing toothpastes, certain cosmetics used on face , hormonal imbalance etc.. Maintaining lubrication alone can be soothing but will not relieve the symptoms completely.. You should consult a skin doctor and get evaluated and he can advise you a course of antibiotics like Erythromycin, metronidazole etc. Topical antiseptic ointment can also help.. Also avoid steroid or chemical containing creams, avoid fluoridated toothpaste and maintain a good hygiene..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
