What Causes Burning, Swelling And Itching On Outer Rim Of Ear?

I am experiencing burning, swelling, itching of the top and along outer rim of right ear. Started last Thursday afternoon and has gotten progressively worse over these past 7 days. What is this? Is there a treatment? What causes this. I now have an inner ear ache and saw my doctor yesterday who can t answer the first question but has given me 5 days prescription for penicillin.. please advise.
