What Causes Burning Sensation Upon Water Intake Post Tonsillectomy?

Hi! I had a tonsillectomy a week ago and I m guessing the scabs fell off because now I have this crazy burning sensation especially when I drink water. The only thing that has been helping is coconut water. I know this is probably a strange question but will there be a problem if I decided to just toss the water aside for now?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

I understand your predicament, and I would like to reassure you that coconut water is fine to replace water while you recover. As long as you keep up your hydration of about 2 litres in a day, and you have no other health problems, it is not an issue at all.

The reason we encourage you to drink plain water is to avoid all the added sugar in other beverages. Over time, it will lead to problems like obesity, diabetes, blocked arteries, and a whole host of other problems. It is not advisable to continue drinking coconut water to replace water intake long term due to this, but I am sure a few days of it will not have any adverse effects on your future health.

Hope this helps, and speedy recovery to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
