What Causes Burning Pain In Chest Of A Child Suffering With ADHD?

My son (age 9 1/2) just stated vyvance 30 mg 1 week ago for ADHD. Fantastic response to medication, no side effects until today. He was competing in a swim meet (state championships) and swam harder than he ever has in his life. After two of his three races he felt a burning pain n his chest that lasted for a few minutes after the race was over. Discomfort was located left lateral chest and axilla. No pre syncope, HR during the episode was about 120. We have no history of structural heart disease or sudden death in our family. ( I am an internist). He has been a healthy child and has been a competitive athlete for the last three years with no other issues. He is fine now. Plan to have him get an EKG and echo asap but should we do anything right now?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The burning pain in chest while heading for competition of high quality suggests possible acute gastritis from stress induced condition most likely. Though EKG and echo are part of protocols to rule out hidden cardiac condition, at present:
- Proton pump inhibitor as Omeprazole
- Antacid such as syrup Mylanta or others are best recommendations for transient relief.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
