What Causes Bulging Lines Near Abdomen And Pain?

I have some bulging lines running mainly down the center of my abdomen and then diagonally toward the middle of my right (dominant side) pectoral. I think it s just muscle knots that I may have aggravated and I have to stretch or tighten the skin to see them, but I can feel them easily. They are tender to the touch and the bulging lines seem to have the consistency possibly as tough as a tendon. When pulling the skin on top and undersides of the lines it feels like a rubber band being stretched to almost breaking, but the pain seems to be less intense if I stretch moments later. It seems like just muscle knotting and would make sense because I often lift heavy items at work and don t stretch consistently, but the bulging lines were something I hadn t seen before. There s no discoloration. It just sort of looks like mountain ranges under the skin.

Hi,

It is possible that the bulging lines you are experiencing could be muscle knots or trigger points, which are areas of muscle that have become tender and tight due to overuse, poor posture, or injury. These knots can cause pain and discomfort, as well as restricted movement.

Another possible cause of bulging lines in the abdomen could be a hernia, which occurs when part of an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. Hernias can cause pain, discomfort, and a visible bulge in the affected area.

It is important to see a healthcare provider determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and receive appropriate treatment. Depending on the cause, treatment options may include physical therapy, massage, stretching exercises, or surgery.

In the meantime, you can try to manage your symptoms by:
- Avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous activity that may aggravate the affected area
- Applying heat or ice to the affected area to help relieve pain and inflammation
- Taking over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed

It is important to follow your healthcare provider's instructions for any medication or treatment recommendations and attend all scheduled appointments for your condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
