What Causes Bruising And Swelling In The Legs And Forearms?

94 year old mother in nursing home -- legs were purple and swollen so compression socks were put on and legs elevated. Now, forearms and hands are purplish. What could it be? I am in Massachusetts and she is in Detroit with my sister who is texting me

* The bluish discoloration warrant possible compromise with the blood supply to the periphery of a limb in most of the issues.
* She requires immediate evaluation with Doppler ultrasound of the concerned limb for checking the status of peripheral circulation after thorough clinical examination for peripheral pulses.
