What Causes Brown Coloured Stool And Diarrhea?

Just had a bowel movements which was looser after not being able to go very much lately and the stool was brown however there were red in some of it that kind of looked like peppers and some darker almost black looking in it kind of like collard leaves- now I did eat salsa last week at work and ate zucchini with the skin on it just a few days ago, could that be the cause of those or should I be worried?

Hello,

Brown colored stool and diarrhea is commonly due to indigestion. You can take anti-diarrheals (Loperamide or bismuth subsalicylate-Pepto-Bismol) to feel better. In the meantime, keep yourself well hydrated. Take ORS, soups and warm beverages to keep your body electrolyte balance, blood glucose and blood pressure normal.

However, brown colored stool may be indicative of bile pigment in stool. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP to detect any developing liver problems. Get CBC, urinalysis, blood for bile pigment / bilirubin, liver function tests done. Avoid taking oily, spicy junk food, do not take raw food and vegetables, cut on fatty food, trans fat, red meat, cheese, utter, etc.

Take boiled food, do not overload your liver. Take small meals multiple times a day. Take liver tonics (Liv-52), digestives (Syp Aristozyme) and adequate rest. Avoid working late nights.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
