What Causes Breathlessness And Coughing After Having General Anesthesia?

Our four-year-old son recently had general anesthesia. That was two days ago. He wakes up crying during the night with difficulty breathing and coughing. He does not want water. He has also begun snoring since the general anesthesia. Should we be concerned? Is this a part of recovery?

hi
thank you for asking your concern and welcome to HCM. if the symptoms are only during night or they are increasing in night then i would suggest not to ignore and consult your doctor. due to insertion of tube in airway during anesthesia some residual cough, horseness of voice and if minimal amount of aspiration happend then lung inflamation these all may present but usually subsides over the time.
if some symptoms are present during day time and increases during night which wakes him up, measure respiratory rate when he is quite if it is more than 40, if whisle like sound is there during sleeping then this may be early onset asthma. i would suggest you to please evaluate for this consulting your doctor.
i hope i answered your concern.
