What Causes Bouts Of Cough Post Alcohol Intake?

I have observed overtime that each time I take alcohol, it triggers cough about 10 to 20 minutes after taking alcohol. It gets worse at night when I lie on the bed to sleep. It makes me so uncomfortable that I have to sit up to reduce the frequency. What is the actual problem and what is the health implications?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Alcohol may worsen GERD (acid reflux from the stomach) and may cause you to have cough.
Cough due to GERD is worse when lying down and improves when standing up. So, you seem to have the typical symptoms of GERD.

The possible health implications are related to aspiration pneumonia (lung infection) and also chronic lung damage that may be a complication of chronic GERD.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
