Hi,
Hematuria after radiotherapy on
prostate, is a common side effect seen. This side effect is seen usually after some weeks or months or even years, may be even after 5-20 years of radiotherapy.
Though, less common (1-2 %) but most challenging to treat is
radiation cystitis, as due to radiation, bladder and prostate become friable and hence may cause hematuria, usually after years of radiotherapy. This is more common in patients, who had
brachytherapy with external beam radiation.
As, this is a common side effect, seen even years after radiation, hence, you can wait for your regular appointment at least for a few days. However, if the hematuria is gross and persisting, causing more distressing symptoms, then you are required to see your doctor immediately or go to ER for further evaluation and treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
