What Causes Blood In Urine Intermittently?

I had an exam for a job and was told there was blood in my urine. I didn't have any pain urinating nor any thing else that bothered me. That was 2 weeks ago. The other day I urinated and it was dark red from start to finish. Two days passed and it happened again. The other times my urine seemed normal color. I still have no other pains or burning. I am 62, male, was a smoker but quit about 5 years ago. Moderate drinker (no more then 2 or 3 beers) a couple times a week.

Hello Sir,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concerns.

Seeing blood on your urine may be scary and often it may have benign causes, but sometimes it can indicate serious conditions, so t is important to determine the reason of bleeding. Normally it takes very little blood to produce red coloured urine, and the bleeding usually isn't painful.
The fact that you do not mention having other signs or symptoms, like feaver or pain and burning during uriantion and flank pain, makes me rule out kidney and urinary tract infections.
The other remaining options include bladder or kidney stone which can also cause both gross and microscopic bleeding, enlarged prostate which is associated also with difficulty urinating, an urgent or persistent need to urinate, and either visible or microscopic blood in the urine, or Cancer, which can be associated with visible urinary bleeding, and may be a sign of advanced kidney, bladder or prostate cancer.
With taking in consideration your age, my impression is that you might have enlarged prostate. My recommendation is to seek a consult with your local urologist, in order to rule out any possible serious disorder.

Hope I answered to your question. For further concerns or follow up questions feel free to ask again.

Wishing you health,
Dr. Ina
