What Causes Blood In Urine And Back Pain In A Diabetic Person?

My husband has been experiencing blood in his urine and severe back and pains in his side. He has also lost 10 pounds this week. He has been suffering from fatigue and wants to sleep all the time. He is diabetic. He is 68 years old. What might be the cause of his problem.

Hi there and thanks for sharing your question with us on HCM.

Blood in the urine and severe pains in the side and back suggest that there might be a stone between the kidneys and the bladder. As the stone moves along the narrow ureter (tube which connects the kidney to the bladder), it scratches the delicate lining of the ureter, causing bleeding which appears as blood in the urine. This damage caused by the stone also sets the stage for a nasty urinary tract infection.

Besides bleeding, there is a lot of stress on the body - in diabetics, blood sugar can go haywire because of infection caused by a renal stone. When blood sugar is too high, the patient can feel very tired and might try to cope with this situation by wanting to sleep all the time. High blood sugar also means that the cells cannot get the energy and nutrients they need. When this happens, a diabetic starts to lose weight significantly and quickly. However this weight loss is unhealthy as muscle tissue is being lost.

Passing a kidney stone is very, very painful - it is considered to be almost as painful as childbirth. As your husband is diabetic, his nerves may be affected and he may not be able to feel the pain as much.

You need to get him to his doctor as soon as possible and have him or her check the following:
1. test his blood sugar
2. rule out something called diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious diabetic condition that can take place when a diabetic is stressed by an event like this kidney stone and infection)
3. discuss the next step in treating his renal stone and urine infection

Do take him for treatment as soon as possible. Older diabetics are more sensitive to the complications caused by infections and high blood sugar.

Hope this helps. Take care and thank you.
