My husband has had fluid drained from his lungs several times , the last time they said it had blood in the fluid . He has a number of problems and had his tongue removed about 4 years ago , he s on a peg tube & Can t eat or drink or talk . He s lost a lot of weight. Our primary Dr. Told us last week his cancer has come back in the floor of his mouth . We see his cancer surgeon in 2 days . I was concerned about the blood in the fluid they drained . He has agent orange , & smoked years ago , He is 76 years old . I hope this small amount of information will help . Thank you. He s a Veitnam Veteran almost 10 years .

The most common cause for blood in pleural effusion is cancerous involvement of the pleura. Since he had oral cancer which has recurred, the possibility of malignant pleural effusion is more likely. So better to get the CT thorax with contrast done and pleural fluid cytology to rule out malignant pleural effusion. He may need pleurodesis and chemotherapy.
