What Causes Blood In Stool?

I am 19 years old, approximately 5'10 and about 240 pounds. I have no medical history that I can think of. Starting today, I have noticed that my stool contained an alarming amount of blood. However, when I go to the bathroom, there is slight discomfort, but not overly painful. Is this a sign of a bad thing about to happen?
