What Causes Blood In Stool While On Tramadol?

My 87 year old mother has been taking tramadol for arthritis pain; supposedly just 1 per day as needed, but in the past 6 months I've noticed she's getting her prescription refilled more than that. In the past few months she's also had many episodes of bloody stools and has had to have transfusions. Could the tramadol be causing this?

Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

Tramadol does not usually cause bloHowever, blood in stools, especially in an elderly person, require further evaluation with rectal examination, stool analysis, colonoscopy etc.
It is important to rule out hemorrhoids, anorectal tumor, and colonic tumor as a cause of such bleeding.

Please be advised to follow-up with a primary care provider/ gastroenterologist for further evaluation.

Dr.Lekshmi
