What Causes Blood In Semen?

I am a 66 year old male. In July 2016 I had some blood in my urine and semen. I saw an urologist who did an ultrasound on my kidneys and bladder. Also had a Cystoscopy done. My urine was also checked. These tests came back good. Said there was no problem with my prostate either. Dr. gave me a prescription for sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim 800/160 mg. The meds seemed to clear up the problem. Then, about a month ago, I noticed blood in my semen again (but not in my urine). Do you suspect it to be an infection or something more?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms could be due to vesiculitis (inflammation of the seminal vesicles), seminal vesicle cystsprostatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), high blood pressure, rarely cancer of bladder, testis, prostate. I would suggest to consult urologist and undergo color doppler USG of scrotum and pelvis, semen culture, routine blood tests, STD screening, rectal examination, serum PSA test, coagulation profile.Specific treatment will depend on cause and test results.

Meanwhile you can take broad spectrum antibiotic like Cefuroxime and Ibuprofen. Drink plenty of water, and juice of cranberry, orange and pineapple, avoid stress and do regular exercise.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
