What Causes Blood In Diarrhea?

My mother has had diarrhea for 2 days now but it s nothing but pure blood. It s bright red blood. She has been feeling nauseous and she s had headaches. This is the 2nd day she s had this issue. Should I take her to the emergency room or will its treat itself? Any idea what it could be? She does not urine blood.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand the concern for your mother.
Blood mixed diarrhea is generally indicative of 'amoebic dysentry'.
But since you are complaining that the stools are bright red in color, it indicates the bleeding could be fresh blood and may be due to bleeding from hemorrhoids.
Since she has other complaints of nausea and headache, it is better to get her evaluated in the emergency room.
In the mean time, keep her well hydrated by giving plenty of fluids.
Take care.
