What Causes Blindness While On Losartan?

I was just prescribed Losartan 25 mg by my cardiologist to lower blood pressure that is 140/90. I am a 50 year old male otherwise healthy. I just read that one of the side effects is blindness. It seems unreal that a drug could cause this and still be on the market. Is this a real risk of this medicine?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Commonly prescribed in the treatment of high blood pressure, the most common side effects of Losartan include low blood pressure, increased blood potassium, dry cough and swelling of the lips, eyes or tongue.

It is not known to cause blindness. Blindness could be due to retinopathy resulting from uncontrolled blood pressure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
