What Causes Bleeding In The Mouth?

A friend woke up and found he had bled out of the mouth in his sleep. He went to er where they did an ekg and an X-ray. They told him they saw patches of blood in the X-ray and he has antibiotics to take before and after eating. Is this a bleeding ulcer? How long does it usually take to heal?
