What Causes Bleeding From The Throat After Silver Nitrate Cautery For Nasal Bleeding?

Hello Doctor,I had a nose bleeding (one nostril) 2 weeks back. I consulted an ENT specialist. A silver nitrate cautery was performed. Today morning, I had blood coming from throat after brushing my teeth. It appeared for sometimes till I gargled with water. I felt slight discomfort in my throat last night, and I gargled salt water. I did the same today morning also after seeing the blood stains.I do not have fever or any cold like symptoms. Should I be worried? Or wait for any other symptoms before another consultation?

Hi,

Silver nitrate cautery is usually done in anterior epistaxis. You are now having posterior epistaxis as blood is flowing back into the throat. Most probably bleeding is from the cauterized site. Otherwise, endoscopy can be done to locate any source of bleeding in the posterior part of the nasal cavity.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
