What Causes Bleeding, Back Pain, Abdomen Cramping And Swelling After An Abortion?

I had an surgical abortion on friday 10th october this year. And scince then I ve had heavy bleeding for three days, servere cramp and swelling at the lower abdomen and significant pain in the lower back area. I was addmitted to A.E on tuesday night and was given some animoxacillin which I started the following day. I ended up having a bad reaction to those and amediately contacted my doctor who then this morning perscribed me two different antibiotics to take twice a day. My problem is that the lower abdomen pain hasn t really dissapeared and the lower back pain is becoming unbearable. I haven t started the new course of antbiotics because the pharmacy was out of stock of one particular antibiotc. Iv been advised not to start them until tomorrow morning ounce I have the full packet of antibiotics from my pharmacy. Till then my lower back is incrediably tender and sore and inflamed. What should do? And what could be the issue?

Dear Friend,

Your history suggests that you could be having one or more of the following:
1. Infection following the abortion. Your doctors have diagnosed the same and hence prescribed you antibiotics which you will have to take and follow up with the doctor. The pain you are getting is due to the inflammation of the reproductory organs.
2. It is likely that some products of infection might have remained inside the uterus leading to excessive bleeding. Uterus tries to throw them out by severe contractions giving rise to pain in abdomen. Ultrasonography can confirm the status. These products may get infected also.
3. Excessive bleeding due to either of the cause will have to be expelled out of the uterus. Uterus tries to contract to stop the bleeding and expel the bleeding out. This gives rise to pain.

You have been rightly given antibiotics to control the infection. If the bleeding is too much, you may request the doctor to prescribe you medicines to contract the uterus. By the time you get antibiotics from the medical store, you can get some relief from the pain by some pain killers with anti-inflammatory medicines.

Please do not ignore and follow your doctors advice strictly.

I hope this helps you.
