What Causes Bleeding And Watery Discharge From The Left Ear?

I have tubes in my ears. They were placed the end of June 2016 so have only been in for 3 months approximately. I still have regular pressure and drainage from the tubes regularly. But today all of a sudden I have bright red blood and severe watery drainage from my left ear. Do I need to be concerned? I understand that this may be an ear infection but just need to know if this is an emergency type situation or can wait till my ENT opens tomorrow.

Hello,

You have a history of tube surgery, watery discharge after tube surgery is commonly due to pressure changes in the ear.

Though chances of ear infections are likely. Visit ER, get examined physically. You may need intravenous injections of antibiotics if infection is severe. Otherwise oral antibiotics will work effectively.

You may have to go through a hearing test (Audiometry) to assess the severity of the infection.

Do not try to clean your ear with cotton swabs, do not put any medicines into it, avoid touching your ears. You can take Acetaminophen for relief from pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
