Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an 8 year old grandson that his mother thinks has OCD because he dwells on something and carries on if he thinks something or someone has done something to him, he will obsess about it to the point where we have to tell him enough is enough at that point he stops for awhile than will start carrying on about it again and he has a long memory! He was also completely potty trained but in the past year or more will wet himself after being told to go to the bathroom or saying he doesn't have to go. he will wet and then say he spilled water on himself or someone else did. It makes me very said and I feel very bad for him because the other kids know that he wet.
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. The symptoms that carrying on one thing repeatedly preceded by thinking that someone has done something to him, abnormal behaviours related to passing the faeces etc could occur in OCD. It is not common to develop OCD at 8 years age so proper evaluation is needed to make diagnosis. Other mental causes of similar symptoms should be ruled out. Abnormal restricted repetitive behaviour can occur in autistic child but you haven't mentioned that he is showing any other symptom of autism so this can be ruled out easily. Other possibility is some underlying anxiety and out of that anxiety he is doing things in a particular manner. Take him to a psychiatrist for evaluation. If the diagnosis comes out to be OCD then medicines like SSRIs especially Fluoxetine can help him. The drug is an approved drug for use in children for anxiety. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription.
