What Causes Balance Problem And Deep Vein Thrombosis With History Of Having DBS Implant?

I would like to know what to expect.... My husband was diagnosed in 1987 at age 38 and is now 65. He recieved the DBS implant bilaterally in 2011. When I used up all my leave I retired 3 months afterward his implant as he could not be alone. Currently he has balance problems and is at risk for falls. Also has deep vein thrombosis. He has speech and swallowing problems, constipation, memory and thinking difficulties. Unable to stand alone without falling. I put condom caths on him at bedtime so he does not need to get up during the night. Go ahead and tell me how bad its going to get.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the deep brain stimulation implant is used in Parkinsonism condition usually to control the symptoms where the medications are not giving precise results.

* The difficulty in balance, speech, swallowing problems indicate worsening of underlying basic pathology of brain with degeneration of substantia nigra and other related structures of the brain.

* As there is implant in situ, MRI would not be feaible investigation of choice for his condition, I would recommend a CT scan of the brain for further evaluation and guidelines accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
